Author: B Porter It’s that time when kids don their costumes and set out on their quest for treats. As a kid, I thought about the night’s adventure all day long and could not wait to get home from school. Within seconds of arriving home, my costume was on and I watched the clock. It seemed like an eternity as I waited for the moment to arrive. We would trick-or-treat for blocks and finish out the night with a big treat bag bulging with candy and then we would sort it, and resort it, trade it, and of course, eat it. I know how much fun Halloween was for me as a kid and I certainly want kids today to experience that same thrill. That said, I also feel a little guilty giving out all that candy. But hey, they are already getting a ton of candy so why not sneak in some other treats that aren’t packed full of sugar. They can even be treats that will provide enjoyment long after the Halloween costumes are boxed up and packed away. What are some good candy alternatives? Well here’s a little list I made up - and ran it by my kids: Crayons Coloring books Pencils (especially mood pencils) Glow-in-the-dark anything Little Flashlights Bracelets, rings, necklaces Cool-shaped Erasers Pencil clip Cute sticky notes Pencil sharpeners Cool toothbrushes Stickers Temporary tattoos Shoe lace tags and zipper pulls You can find these items in bulk all over the web and can even imprint your own Halloween wishes to make them special. If you are planning a large parade of kids you can find some of these items for as little as six or seven cents apiece. If you are dealing with a smaller group, you might justify some of the more novel ideas that could cost a little more. Either way, the kids will enjoy the variety and you can feel good about your treat. |
